
Browns Hotels & Resorts (BHR), the hospitality arm of local conglomerate the Browns Group, recently commemorated World Tourism Day with several activities cross the Group including a tourism walk under the theme “Tourism and Jobs; a better future for all”.
The walk, which began at the Group’s Beruwala resort Eden, covered the Bentota-Beruwela area with the specific objective of educating peopleabout the social, economic and cultural values of the industry. It also highlighted the significant benefits of tourism for the local community, while encouraging the youth to join one of the main foreign exchange earners for the country.
Over 60 members from the Eden hotel staff along with 10 guests made the walk clad in specially designed T-shirts and caps. The hotel also took the opportunity to promote its sustainability and CSR initiatives – a very crucial factor given the present day context of environmental conditions.Other activities carried out by BHR include beach cleaning with local area school students to raise awareness and the planting of trees.
Commenting on theTourism Day celebrations Eksath Wijeratne, Group General Manager of Browns Hotels & Resorts, said, “We are certain that campaigns like this will greatly contribute to the promotion and development of the industry in the region and will also be successful in achieving the main objective of opening more avenues for job seekers in the field of tourism.”
As a part of BHR’s sustainability initiatives it also focusses on many activities to secure the environment. BHR has significantly reduced the use of plastic and polythene in its operations. These activities have garnered BHR several prestigious awards over the years.
The United Nations World Tourism Organization has celebrated World Tourism Day as international observances on September 27thsince its inception in 1980.
This date was chosen because on that day in 1970, the Statutes of the UNWTO were adopted.
