IIHS promotes sustainable living through ‘Giving Back to Nature’

IIHS Team at the event.

International Institute of Health Science (IIHS), Sri Lanka’s premier and leading healthcare education institute renowned for the high-quality education in Sri Lanka has stepped up to promote sustainable living through a novel concept of “Giving back to Nature” by planting native plants to protect and promote the growth of nature.

Having understood the repercussions of neglecting nature, the IIHS family were united in their efforts where all staff members brought their tree saplings and planted it whilst tagging their names to each plant, thus granting each member the responsibility of tending to the growth and sustenance of each plant through the application of fertilizer and protecting it from insects.

The event was graced by Dr Nihal De Silva, Chairman and Dean IIHS, Dr Kithsiri Edirisinghe CEO and Co-founder IIHS, members of the Board of Directors, Higher Management of IIHS and staff.

Commenting on the initiative, Dr Kithsiri Edirisinghe CEO and Co-founder IIHS, said, “I believe this concept will help to drive the responsibility of protecting and caring for mother nature. Focusing on development we have neglected our natural environment. Nature, therefore, has now begun to rebel against us calling us to tend and care in the manner that we are supposed to do.”

“Our staff were very supportive of this venture and we planted more than 500 trees and collected a further 2000 saplings to support future plantations. We are very keen on giving back to nature in a wholesome way,” stated Dr Edirisinghe.

IIHS has been involved in numerous projects which have promoted a larger concept of giving back to society. One similar project was carried out during the lockdown period that took place earlier this year, the staff planted trees in their home gardens in celebration of the New year.

ADSTUDIO.CLOUD drives communal change and empowers the nation as the ‘Programmatic Advertising Company in Sri Lanka’

ADSTUDIO.CLOUD drives communal change and empowers the nation as the ‘Programmatic Advertising Company in Sri Lanka’

Despite the pandemic having disrupted businesses in Sri Lanka and across the globe, dependence on digital advertising and online marketing has grown leaps and bounds. Similarly, the move by the Sri Lankan government to register foreign digital operators has drawn the attention of many. Owing to the rising mutual concern on social media user security across the world, this decision prevents global digital platforms from invading user information, business data and drive destructive marketing. This prevents the adverse impact on medium scale local companies and salvages the Sri Lankan economy by preventing a huge sum of money from leaving the country via these digital platforms.

Adding to this, the recent crossfire between Apple and Facebook has further confirmed this dilemma. Facebook faults Apple's new iOS 14 privacy policy limiting a businesses' ability to run personalized ads and reach their customers effectively. Apple has responded that social media users should approve the data collected about them and how it’s used and hence the ‘App Tracking Transparency’ in iOS 14 requires permission first. Though this might distress the social media giant’s business, ‘Programmatic Advertising’ is considered as one of the feasible solutions to address this snowballing global issue.

In a research survey in London, over 60% of respondents were happy with programmatic advertising as it enhances personalization and improves the overall brand experience for the consumer. This experience is elevated further when marketers first address the ‘consent concern’. By making it a priority to receive consent from social media users, research shows that 3 in 4 consumers in the UK appreciate the transparency and often willing to give their consent. Besides, updated privacy regulations also mean the need to create high-quality and laser-focus ads that are competitive and relevant. So, it’s a great time for ‘Programmatic Advertising’ to be the game changer in ad strategy along with updating privacy concerns.

‘Programmatic Advertising ’via ADSTUDIO.CLOUD has a positive impact to the Sri Lankan economy as it generates additional ad revenue to local publishers. Also ADSTUDIO.CLOUD, is the first programmatic advertising platform in Sri Lanka to follow global standards with a 'full-stack programmatic advertising ecosystem' lets publishers, advertisers, brands and every other user maximize revenue on chosen channels via smart advertising tools.

ADSTUDIO.CLOUD’s revolutionary all-in-one ecosystem connects a multitude of advertisers, 250+ publishers (including mainstream, regional and niche publications) and brands across diverse industries. To date, ADSTUDIO.CLOUD has paid over LKR 28Mn to local publishers whilst serving the banking, telecommunication, education, FMCG, retail and consumer electronics, digital media and advertising agencies. Another ground-breaking stride of ADSTUDIO.CLOUD is the ‘Programmatic Colombo Program ’held in Sep 2020 - the first event of this nature to be held in Sri Lanka featuring Matt Prohaska (USA), to conduct a series of knowledge-sharing sessions on Programmatic Advertising and related domains.

Incepted in 2019, ADSTUDIO.CLOUD is a trailblazing Ad Tech company unleashing the real power of programmatic advertising via Digi-inspired solutions and 'Artificial Intelligence' (AI) backed data-driven platforms. The end-to-end solutions offered empower publishers to monetize better via high-return campaigns and benefit SMEs in multifold by targeting the right audience at the right time with the right platform(even across second and third tiers). Having successfully generated over 1 Billion impressions for its local publishers in all three languages is a testament to ADSTUDIO.CLOUD's highly result-oriented advertising. As an industry leader to drive impactful futuristic transformation, ADSTUDIO.CLOUD continues to be a catalyst to maximize digital earnings for publishers, connect brands with target markets and enable advertisers to confidently launch high return advertising campaigns.

Well-structured institutional framework must to tackle increasing cyber security threat: CEO Sri Lanka CERT CC – Lal Dias

Well-structured institutional framework must to tackle increasing cyber security threat: CEO Sri Lanka CERT CC – Lal Dias

A Cyber security incident in Sri Lanka can affect any country in the world hence a well formulated Cyber Security culture is therefore needed to keep such acts at bay says CEO of Sri Lanka CERT Lal Dias.

Computer Emergency Readiness Team - Coordination Center (Sri Lanka CERT |CC) is a government Institution now operating under the Presidential Secretariat. Sri Lanka CERT’s mandate is primarily to ensure that Sri Lanka’s cyber space is secure.

Lal Dias is a Chartered Information Technology professional and a Fellow of the British Computer Society and was educated in the UK and Australia. Dias has been instrumental in the setting up of Sri Lanka CERT|CC.

Extract from the interview with Lal Dias.

What does cyber security mean and what is its importance to the world?

Cyber security is the practice of defending computers, servers, mobile devices, electronic systems, networks, and data from malicious cyber attacks.

Internet thus is a means of superior communication as against conventional communication. If communication and information involving the internet is interfered with in midstream it is a breach of trust between the parties involved.

Is cyber security a decisive factor as regards uplifting the economy of a country?

Yes, it does now. Tourism industry for example could get badly affected due to a cyber-attack. If the immigration systems are compromised at the height of tourist season, tourist cannot arrive. It creates a huge backlog and the impact on the economy of the country will be huge.

Ransomware can encrypt all data in your computer and the entire network and in order to decrypt your data you need the decryption key which is held by the attacker who will hold you to ransom. That is a regular occurrence not only in Sri Lanka but around the world involving large corporates, small to medium sized business and individuals, where attackers demand exorbitant sums of money to provide decryption keys to recover data.

Cybercrime play a crucial role in global context now. Your comment.

A tea exporter for example would use an integrated system like enterprise resource planning system aka ERP service. These are tools developed for forecasting, monitoring inventory levels, processing orders, optimizing shipping process and many more.

It minimizes manual intervention in all operations. ERP systems help large and medium sized e-Commerce businesses around the world to reduce costs and to help operate business processes effectively. A Cyber-attack can hamper this process and see the downfall of a huge company.

As far as cybercrime is concerned Prevention is better than cure. CERT’s security strategy is based on finding ways of detecting vulnerabilities to prevent a cyber-attack. Prevention and also management which emphasizes more on implementing sound information security policies and practices go hand-in-hand.

Who are Black hat, white hat and gray hat hackers? Can we use the potential of young blood to detect potential hacking vulnerabilities?

Black Hat hackers are criminals who break into computer systems and networks with malicious intent. They may also release malware that destroys files, holds computers hostage, or steals passwords, credit card numbers, and other personal information.

Ethical hackers or white hat hackers report vulnerabilities they catch. To enter into someone else’s computer system is illegal. These volunteers use the internet to explore vulnerabilities. Vulnerabilities are also available on the Web. After finding those they pass that information to responsible authorities. Multinational service providers like Google have a ‘Bug Bounty’ program where youngsters become members. Every time they find a bug in the Google platform, Google would reward them. It is possible for a Sri Lankan youngster to become a member.

In the old days’ hackers did it for bragging rights, but modern day hackers do not do it for fun, they mean business and they are inclined to make money for themselves. Most of these hackers are moonlighting. They have a regular day job.

Why do hackers love untrusted public Wi-Fi?

One of the dangers of using untrusted public Wi-Fi network is that data over this type of open connection is often unencrypted and unsecured, leaving you vulnerable to a man-in-the-middle (MITM) attack. What is an MITM? It’s when a cybercriminal exploits a security flaw in the network to intercept data.

Essentially, this gives a hacker access to sniff out any information that passes between you and the websites you visit — details of browsing activities, account logins, and purchase transactions. Your sensitive information, such as passwords and financial data, are then vulnerable to identity theft.

What is the core competency of Sri Lanka CERT and how does this entity make people aware of the importance of cyber security?

Our mandate is primarily to ensure that Sri Lanka’s cyber space is secured.

We play a much wider role in terms of coordinating efforts with law enforcement agencies and the Defence establishment as and when requested, even though they themselves are well equipped with the required cyber security skills. For example, CERT is a member of the expert panel under the Payment Devices and Frauds Act of 2006, and as a result we are required to carry out Digital Forensics Examinations based on a Court Order issued.

The best defense for cyber issues, is the creation of awareness.

We do awareness programs regularly. The most popular such program is the ‘Cyber Security Week’ which we run every year during one whole week encompassing a 5-day conference with international speakers, a cyber-security quiz for the school children, a hacking challenge and multiple Workshops. This time around due to Covid-19, we would do a webinar series, five days of webinars and five days of cyber exercises. These will be like fire drills on different topics. More than fifty percent of the presenters consist of international speakers.

Our awareness and training programs cover a much wider citizen base ranging from school children to senior government executives. We have recently initiated a program to train 10,000 government executives.

Since internet is borderless, we have a worldwide community supporting us. In cyberspace, cyber security vulnerabilities are global and borderless and therefore it was necessary to establish relationships with international bodies.

The Asia Pacific CERT (APCERT) has 26 member countries. Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams aka FIRST has 400 members from around the world including all the big nations and mega service providers like Facebook, Google & Microsoft etc. and Sri Lanka has been an active member for the last 13 years. We exchange cyber threat intelligence with this community 24/7 and 365 days of the year.

This is how the global community protects information on internet.

Are our school children being educated of cybercrime?

Yes. That’s happening now. Education Ministry educates these children via the schools’ IT clubs to create awareness. CERT with its teacher-training program educates the IT teachers. The Education Ministry organizes groups of teachers from each region to gather in Colombo for residential programs to undergo training.

One of our strategies is implementation of sector-based CERTs. The financial sector already has its own CERT which is called, FinCSIRT (Computer Security Incident Response Team) which is funded by the banks and supported by the Central Bank. Likewise, the education sector too has a CERT called the EduCSIRT. Sri Lanka CERT|CC acts as the coordinating center in order to resolve cyber security issues that are escalated to us.

Is there legislation, policies and standards that are implemented as regards cyber security in Sri Lanka?

There are number of legislations. Computer Crime Act of 2007 was the very first piece of legislation that came out. That paved way for Sri Lanka CERT to be established as a subsidiary of ICTA in 2006 and came into operation in 2007. The Electronic Transactions Act and Payment devices and Frauds Act too are there.

CERT would issue guidelines to all government organizations to protect their information systems, and plan to benchmark the adoption of information security controls at various government organizations. Since CERT is now under the Presidential Secretariat, so we are in a good position to enforce these guidelines at government institutions.

Could you elaborate on the Cyber Security Strategy of Sri Lanka CERT?

Sri Lanka’s first Information and Cyber Security Strategy will be implemented over a period of five years from 2019 to 2023. Our strategy aims to create a resilient and trusted cyber security ecosystem that will enable Sri Lankan citizens to realize the benefits of digital technology and facilitate growth, prosperity and a better future for all Sri Lankans.

What is militarization of cyber security, and what is cyberwarfare? Are we prepared as a country to face cyberwarfare?

Cyber warfare is a different topic altogether, and it’s a domain that Sri Lanka’s Defence/Military establishment is well aware of and is something that we have to be very concerned as a nation.

It could well be the next wave of attacks that Sri Lanka will have to endure. It would be not with conventional guns and bullets but cyber. This can paralyze critical infrastructure of a country. You don’t have to have an airplane crashing into the critical Department building. Instead of that the attackers could paralyze a Department through a cyber-attack. Thus critical infrastructure providers in this country have to make sure that their computer systems are secured.

Sri Lanka’s Defence establishments are well trained in this field.

EU-funded TAMAP guides the Fruit and Vegetable sector

EU-funded TAMAP guides the Fruit and Vegetable sector

Strap: To unlock export potential through reefer container technology

While Sri Lankan exports of fruits and vegetables have grown over the years, the country is yet to achieve its full potential in gaining a larger share of the Middle Eastern and European markets due to various gaps along the value chain.

Sri Lankan exports are perceived as expensive compared to the competition, unable to increase volumes required to be competitive, and constrained by high freight costs. The onset of the pandemic exacerbated the situation due to limited export possibilities and increased air freight expenses.

With a focus on expanding exports towards the Middle Eastern and European markets, the Lanka Fruits & Vegetable Producers, Processors and Exporters Association (LFVPPEA)requested the EU-funded ‘Technical Assistance to the Modernisation of Agriculture Programme’ (TAMAP)to guide on how to unlock the export potential of the Fruit and Vegetable sector by resorting to reefer container technology.

TAMAP responded to the LFVPPEA by providing knowledge and assistance on efficient and effective reefer container management and post-harvest handling for sea freight and guidance on quality harvesting protocols and management of freight failure.

In this respect, TAMAP engaged two experts specialised in horticulture value chain management and export logistics: M. N.Prabath- an expert in international trade and logistics, including the shipping industry, and Keith Roxburgh– an international technical specialist in fresh produce cold chain, supply chain and marine claims.

Throughout the assignment, TAMAP had several meetings with LFVPPEA’s members and other agro-exporters involved in the sector. The experts engaged in one-on-one encounters, visited plantations to assess workflows, provided advisory support on how to improve export volumes, and organized several pieces of training. During the assignment, Prabath and Roxburgh conducted a virtual workshop on “The value of the supply chain for reefer container exports”. While bringing forward core concepts related to reefer technology, participants were provided with a thorough introduction to cold room management and logistics principles and practices.

Prabath noted, “Through our assignment, we aimed to provide exporters with best practices, and support them on how to define claim prevention so as to minimize possible logistical repercussions.”

TAMAP’s experts worked also with the Export Development Board, to widen their reach to support other exporters keen to learn more about reefer technology. TAMAP also conducted sessions for frontline leaders of several fruit and vegetable export organizations. A workshop on ‘Risk Mitigation and Claims Handling’ was held in this regard.

Commenting on the TAMAP Programme, Suresh Ellawala, President of the LFVPPEA said, “At a time when the pandemic has reduced the number of commercial flights and greatly increased cargo rates, our association believes that the transition from air freight to sea freight will be a game-changer for increasing the competitiveness of exports of fresh agri-produce from Sri Lanka.”

With the objective of providing access to all exporters interested in benefitting from reefer technology, TAMAPhas created an online e-library of material relevant to the assignment which includes articles, videos and manuals. All exporters now have access to this digital repository via https://www.eusl-ruraldevelopment.org/reports-documents/, which will support them in their further endeavours.

India’s economy could prove to be ‘most resilient’ in sub region over long term: UN

India’s economy could prove to be the “most resilient” in the subregion of South and South-West Asia over the long term, according to a report by the UN, which says a positive but lower economic growth post COVID-19 pandemic and the country’s large market will continue to attract investments.

The report titled ‘Foreign Direct Investment Trends And Outlook In Asia And The Pacific 2020/2021’, and compiled by United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), stated that inward FDI flows to South and South-West Asia slightly decreased by 2 per cent in 2019, from USD 67 billion in 2018 to USD 66 billion in 2019.

The growth, however, was mainly driven by India, which accounted for 77 per cent of the total inflows to the subregion and received USD 51 billion in 2019, up 20 per cent from the previous year.

The report, released last week, said the majority of these flows were destined for the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and the construction of sub-sector.

Regarding the ICT sector, the report said the investment to India has evolved from information technology services for Multinational enterprises (MNEs) to the thriving local digital ecosystem where many domestic players, especially in e-commerce, have attracted considerable international investment.

The report added that Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) outflows from South and South-West Asia increased for the fourth consecutive year, modestly growing from USD 14.8 billion in 2018 to USD 15.1 billion in 2019.

The geographical spread of FDI outflows from the subregion remained uneven, with just two countries (India and Turkey) accounting for the vast majority of outflows in 2019, it said. (www.indiatimes.com)

‘China to leapfrog U.S. as world’s biggest economy by 2028’

‘China to leapfrog U.S. as world’s biggest economy by 2028’

Employees work on photovoltaic products at a renewable energy company in Tonglu, China

China will overtake the United States to become the world’s biggest economy in 2028, five years earlier than previously estimated due to the contrasting recoveries of the two countries from the COVID-19 pandemic, a think tank said.

“For some time, an overarching theme of global economics has been the economic and soft power struggle between the United States and China,” the Centre for Economics and Business Research said in an annual report published on Saturday.

“The COVID-19 pandemic and corresponding economic fallout have certainly tipped this rivalry in China’s favor.”

The CEBR said China’s “skillful management of the pandemic,” with its strict early lockdown, and hits to long-term growth in the West meant China’s relative economic performance had improved.

China looked set for average economic growth of 5.7% a year from 2021-25 before slowing to 4.5% a year from 2026-30.

While the United States was likely to have a strong post-pandemic rebound in 2021, its growth would slow to 1.9% a year between 2022 and 2024, and then to 1.6% after that.

Japan would remain the world’s third-biggest economy, in dollar terms, until the early 2030s when it would be overtaken by India, pushing Germany down from fourth to fifth.

The United Kingdom, currently the fifth-biggest economy by the CEBR’s measure, would slip to sixth place from 2024.

However, despite a hit in 2021 from its exit from the European Union’s single market, British GDP in dollars was forecast to be 23% higher than France’s by 2035, helped by Britain’s lead in the increasingly important digital economy.

Europe accounted for 19% of output in the top 10 global economies in 2020 but that will fall to 12% by 2035, or lower if there is an acrimonious split between the EU and Britain, the CEBR said.

It also said the pandemic’s impact on the global economy was likely to show up in higher inflation, not slower growth.

“We see an economic cycle with rising interest rates in the mid-2020s,” it said, posing a challenge for governments which have borrowed massively to fund their response to the COVID-19 crisis.

SLIIT grants student loans to undergraduates

SLIIT grants student loans to undergraduates

SLIIT, will continue its subsidies to undergraduate students who are on student loans. The student loan scheme, initiated by the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) in 2017, provides students with a maximum interest free loan to pursue a degree programme approved by the MoHE.

SLIIT which is MoHE and UGC approved, offers several undergraduate programmes under the loan scheme, including a Bachelor of Education (Hons) in English, Bachelor of Education (Hons) in Biological Sciences, Bachelor of Education (Hons) in Physical Sciences, Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons) and Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Information Technology. Since the state loan covers tuition fees over a 4-year period, is less than the usual cost for these degrees, SLIIT has stepped up by providing an outright grant to students who are on loans in order for them to continue their studies uninterrupted.

The state student loan scheme which is entirely free of interest, combined with the SLIIT grant is a boon for students who can pay back the capital, over a period of seven to eight years. Another concession offered to students by the state, is a year's grace period from graduation to begin their pay back.

Prof. Colin N. Peiris, Director, Academic Development and Quality Assurance of SLIIT says “Post Advanced Levels is a critical point in any student’s life and the loan scheme introduced by the Ministry of Higher Education provides students with a window of opportunity. SLIIT has recognised the need to support these students further to take advantage of the different degree options we offer and that is why we are providing the additional grant. At SLIIT we believe in providing every opportunity for our students to realise their full potential.”

The interest free student loan scheme was first introduced by the state in 2017, in line with a budget proposal to expand higher education opportunities for students. It is being reintroduced this year, with the goal of producing 10,000 graduates, who will add to the human capital needed for the nation’s economic and social development.

In 2019 alone, SLIIT pledged Rs 125 million as the top-up value for 306 students waiting to follow their higher education plans. Students who wish to avail of the facility should have achieved 3 simple (S) passes in their respective A/L subjects, and their qualification should be in line with the UGC university entrance requirements.

DFCC Bank wins ‘Best Post-COVID Innovation’ at SLASSCOM RPA awards

DFCC Bank wins ‘Best Post-COVID Innovation’ at SLASSCOM RPA awards

Lakshman Silva

DFCC Bank, the premier commercial bank in Sri Lanka, has yet again proved its commitment as the ‘Bank for Everyone’ by winning the coveted ‘Best Post-COVID Innovation award, presented at the Sri Lanka Association for Software Services Companies (SLASSCOM) RPA Awards 2020. Falling under the Business Continuity Category, this accolade was received for the ‘Automated Debt Moratorium’ initiative, which automated the process of granting moratoriums to people or businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The SLASSCOM RPA (Robotic Process Automation) Awards, is a one-of-a-kind event in Sri Lanka, which includes the recognition and awarding of businesses that come together to innovate and redefine the world through their timely initiatives. Amidst the pandemic in 2020, the awards were held online, and DFCC Bank took home the prestigious award for ‘Best Post-COVID Innovation’, for the case study, ‘Automated Debt Moratorium’.

As per the circular introduced by the Sri Lankan Government, DFCC Bank had initiated the task of providing relief for the people and businesses affected by COVID-19, with moratoriums set to be granted for more than 10,000 loans.

This strenuous process was estimated to take more than 145 man-days to manually process, while the safety measures taken by the Bank to enable work from home posed additional challenges.

This led to the decision to automate this process through RPA, which not only ensured the safety of our employees but also improved the efficiency and accuracy of the moratorium updates. The phenomenally successful implementation of this complex process amidst the time restrictions faced, enabled this case study to be placed first at the SLASSCOM RPA Awards, setting a precedent in the Banking Industry.

Commenting on the award, DFCC CEO Lakshman Silva noted, “DFCC Bank has constantly strived to integrate technology into our processes to enhance the overall banking experience of our customers, and this recognition is further proof to that promise. Adopting emerging and disruptive technology has been at the forefront for us, and RPA is one of many such technologies ventured into by DFCC in 2019, which has helped automate a variety of processes.”

“The knowledge gained in this period allowed for quick application to challenges that arose during the pandemic period. Now, we are both able to ensure the safety of our employees, which provides our customers with the appropriate relief needed, in an accurate and timely manner”.
