Bentota National Holiday Resort re-opens

Minister of Tourism John Amaratunge and other officials reopen the Bentota National Holiday Resort

Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), has invested to reopen National Holiday Resort Bentota - one of the first major initiatives in Sri Lanka’s Tourism history.

The Holiday Resort which was officially opened in 1969 by late J.R. Jayewardene, then Minister of State, was identified in the first 10-Year Tourism Master Plan as a means to stimulate and motivate private sector investments in tourism.

Today, the resort which celebrated its 50th year this year, comprises 1-star to 5-star hotels, restaurants, telecommunication centres, banks, shops, transport services, Police station and a centre for water activities.

“As we reopen the refurbished office complex, the shopping arcade and Sulanka Bungalow, I must commend the team behind this operation as maintaining a resort for 50 years is never easy,” stated Upali Ratnayake, Director General of SLTDA.

The Bentota National Holiday Resort is the best example in Sri Lanka of how well-planned tourism is successful and sustainable, creating the least negative impact on the area and bringing together all stakeholders.
