Stock market creates records in Aug.

The Sri Lankan stock market concluded the month of August on a positive note. Despite the volatile restrictive environment in the country, Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) has seen record breaking levels of performance.

The benchmark All Share Price Index (ASPI) and S& P SL20 index, which features the CSE’s 20 largest and most liquid stocks, maintained an upward momentum. The overall Market Capitalization of the CSE has grown significantly over the past month reaching the Highest Ever Record at the end of the month of August (as at August 31, 2021). Indicating positive market performance, CSE gained a Market Capitalization of Rs. 411 billion within the month of August and at the end of the month Market Capitalization was at Rs. 4,009.50 billion.

To add to the record breaking performance of CSE, Highest Annual Market Turnover has already been achieved with an YTD value of Rs.658.27 billion (as at August 31, 2021). The previous Highest Annual Market Turnover was recorded in 2010 at Rs.570 billion. The market has further recorded the highest Daily Average Turnover ever at Rs. 4.20 billion. CSE was also recorded as the highest gainer among major global markets in August and second-best performer year-to-date (YTD), trading at a 40% discount to peers. The market maintained its discounted position, trading at a Price-to-Earnings (P/E) Ratio of 10.9 times (Which is at a 40% discount to the MSCI frontier market index) and Price-to-Book (P/B) Valuation at 1.2 times (Which is at a 37% discount to the MSCI frontier market index).
