CCPI up 2.1 index points in June

The Colombo Consumers Price Index (CCPI) for all items for the month of June 2021 was 142.4 and it records an increase of 2.1 in index points that is 1.47% compared to the month of May 2021 for which the index was 140 3. This represents an increase of expenditure value by Rs 1,242.46 in the Market Basket.

The month on month change was contributed by increases of food items by 1.25% and nonfood items by 0.21% respectively. Increases in value change were reported for rice (0.54%), vegetables (0.37%). sea fish (0.15%), coconuts (0.09%) and other food products.

While decreases in value change were reported for fresh fruits (0.19%), chicken (004%) and canned fish (0.01%). Among non food groups, increases in value change were reported on ‘transport’ (0.12%), ‘health’ (0.06%) and ‘miscellaneous goods and services’ (0.02%). However, insignificant value changes were reported for the group of ‘alcoholic beverages tobacco and narcotic’.

The overall rate of inflation as measured by CCPI on a year on year basis is 5.2% in June 2021 and year on year inflation calculated for the month of May 2021 was 4.5%.

Year on year, conflation of food groups has increased from 9.9% in May 2021 to 11.3% in June 2021.

While that year on year inflation of nonfood group has also increased from 2.2% in May 2021 to 2.5% in June 2021. For the month of June 2021 on Year-to-Year basis, contribution to inflation by food commodities was 3.49%.
