Severe traffic congestion was present inside the Port of Colombo (POC) of Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) due to constructions of the elevated highway on pillars through the port, connecting the Port City parallel to the development of the national highway system, creating difficulties for the Inter Terminal Trucking (ITT) of containers inside the port.
Prompt actions were taken to break down a part of the boundary wall of Jaya Container Terminal (JCT) 4 container yard to establish a temporary gate to facilitate ITT at stage IV of the JCT of SLPA. The measures were taken according to timely instructions extended by the Chairman of SLPA Capt. Nihal Keppetipola. The new gate facilitates (using converted Porta Cabins) ITT between the SAGT, CICT, ECT, and the JCT of the POC and is currently being operated under the supervision of the Director (Operations) of SLPA Lal Weerasinghe.
The steps have solved the ITT delay issue at the POC and the prompt measures taken to resolve the matter have been commended by the CICT, SAGT, Shipping Agents, and other stakeholder institutions of the POC.
