The Joint Apparel Association Forum (JAAF) yesterday said that the industry was fast recovering from the detrimental impacts of the COVID 19 pandemic thanks to the conscientious vaccination program which has been implemented by the Government.
The 2021 January- August 2021 export figures were a tremendous improvement from the 2020 export figures but nowhere near the 2019 figures, Sri Lanka’s JAAF Secretary General Tuli Cooray told the Daily News Business yesterday.
He said that the January – August 2021 export figures were US $ 3.2 billion which was well over 19% of the US $ 2694 million in 2020 which was a direct impact of the C- 19 but was 9.6 % lower than the US $ 3545 million in 2019.
He attributed the strong recovery in the industry which would be helpful in the attainment of success in the completion of the order book which was full at the moment. He also called upon the Government to instill the appropriate health protocols which would enable the industry to reach the envisaged US $ 5 billion target. He added that the industry was debilitated by 15-20% absenteeism.
