Airport Aviation Services says that they would invest to build a PCR testing facility at the Mattala Airport.
State Minister of Aviation and Development of Export Zones, D. V. Chanaka said that since many airlines have expressed interest to fly to MRIA they will build this facility and it would be opened in three months.
“Then we will be able to conduct PCR tests from this laboratory for tourists visiting Sri Lanka as well as local passengers. This lab will issue a PCR test report in under three hours.” Commenting on the BIA facility he said that the facility has a capacity of conducting 500 tests per hour, with a total of 7,000 tests during one day.
“This is the first time such a high-quality PCR laboratory has been built near an airport in an Asian country.”
Although a private company has invested to set up the laboratory, it is wholly owned by the Airport & Aviation Services Sri Lanka Private Ltd.
The laboratory operates under a two-year management contract. The lab charges $ 40 for a PCR test for travellers.
The PCR testing facility has been established at the airport to end the mandatory hotel quarantine process which was earlier introduced by the Government.
