TRC urges speed up of smartphone production

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) has requested the Chairman of Micro Electric International in Sri Lanka, Dhammika Samarawickrama (Pictured) to speed up the process to manufacture Sri Lanka’s first ever smartphone.

Samarawickrama said that he met TRC, Director General Oshada Senanayake to explain the progress of the venture and he pledged all support from the government towards this historic project.

“We were planning to put out the product in December and the TRC is keen that we put the phone out by August 2021 and we are now working towards this.” Samarawickrama said that earlier negotiations and discussions with their Korean counterparts had been conducted on virtual/zoom due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Now I have been invited to visit Korea next week to sign the agreement papers at the Sri Lanka Embassy in Korea.”

The news item has been picked up by several Korean newspapers and several banks in Sri Lanka and Samarawickrama thanked Daily News Business for exclusively publishing his news item for which there is also a record number of ‘hits’ on the web.
