A one- day free Mobile Medical and Eye Camp for the benefit Senior Citizens was conducted by HelpAge Sri Lanka (HASL) at Sri Wijayarama Temple premises, Chilaw with the funds allocated by Chilaw Finance Ltd, Managing Director the late Don Sirisena Weerasuriya.
According to family members, Weerasuriya had allocated a large sum of money in his legacy to donate for HelpAge Eye Hospital at Sinsapa Road ,Wellawatte to perform free cataract surgeries to less privileged Senior Citizens.
Accordingly, the Medical and Eye camp performed 289 eye screenings and 150 medical screenings. In addition 237 beneficiaries received bifocal spectacles while nine recipients received reading glasses.
Meanwhile, 21 persons would be sent to HelpAge Eye Hospital, Wellawatte for free Cataract Surgeries.
HelpAge Council Member Nishantha Gooneratne highly admired the invaluable donation made by the family members of late Don Sirisena Weerasuriya to improve the vision of a needy section in our own society.
He said HelpAge is a Charitable Organization that works to resolve the social, medical and low vision issues faced by destitute Sri Lankan elderly citizens .
Executive Director Samantha Liyanawaduge said there is a marked improvement in donations made by people and organizations towards the HelpAge Mobile Medical and Eye care and free cataract surgery programmes.
The Hospital has successfully completed over 37,000 free surgeries at the HelpAge Eye Hospital for the past 34 years
A group of medical specialist including Dr. Sarath Gamage assisted the Medical and Eye Camp.
