Blue Lagoon Aquaculture (Pvt) Ltd, a longstanding shrimp researchers in shrimp breeding and farming in Sri Lanka, join hands with Taprobane Seafoods Group, pioneers in Pasteurized Crab Meat and Sri Lanka’s first SPF (Specific Pathogens Free) Penaeus Vannamei (white leg shrimp) Shrimp farming, to introduce modern aquaculture practices in SPF Penaeus Monodon (Black Tiger) hatcheries.
“The country’s prawn industry which is over four decades is necessary to introduce SPF domesticated bloodstock cultures as the only possible way forward to meet the global demands sustainably. This joint venture would help achieve this,” said Mohan Fernando, Chairman and Managing Director of Blue Lagoon Aquaculture.
Mohan Fernando, who had been involved in an extensive research in the prawn industry during the past 5 years, had introduced the SPF Penaeus Monodon (Black Tiger shrimp) which is a first in Sri Lanka.
“Sri Lanka which is suitable for various forms of aquaculture and shrimp industry, is a rewarding business and a good foreign exchange earner for the country’s economy. This has been well identified by both companies’ leadership and alliance towards the common objective of boosting the shrimp industry through this initiative.”
In this venture, Taprobane’s investment would include acquisition of land, introducing state of the art practices, upgraded technical machinery and providing qualified teams from Thailand who have proven records in SPF Black Tiger Shrimp farming. This would no doubt increase PL from 10 million to 50 million in the next 6 months.”
Dilan Fernando, Director of Taprobane says, “this investment would enable better access to farmers and with Taprobane having the only approved SPF Vannamei (white leg shrimp) hatchery in Sri Lanka, would enable farmers to obtain high quality SPF Vannamei and Black Tiger POST LARVAE(baby shrimps) for their farms.
Speaking about the success of Sri Lanka’s first SPF Vannamei farming, Managing Director of Taprobane Sea foods Timothy O’Reilly, said that this joint venture would bring a sustainable development to the shrimp industry through the innovative approach operationalised domestically.
“Taprobane is now a fully vertically integrated seafood company and are experts in SPF Vannamei in Sri Lanka. We have expanded our farms from 1 pilot project to 3: 2 in Mannar District and also in the Chilaw district.”
This initiative would bring more entrepreneurs to the sector and increase employment opportunities to communities.
“Today, the shrimp industry is importing aqua feed and if one could manufacture aqua feed in Sri Lanka, it could save plenty of foreign exchange to the country,” he said.
