A team of senior members of the Plastics and Rubber Institute of Sri Lanka (PRISL), met with Karunarathna Paranawithana, Deputy Minister of Skills Development and Vocational Training on August 20, at the Ministry office to discuss training and skills development programs conducted by the PRISL.
The Plastics and Rubber Institute of Sri Lanka (PRISL), is the apex industrial training body for the plastics and rubber industry, established in 1960 as the local section of the Institution of the Rubber Industry in London and subsequently renamed as The Plastics and Rubber Institute – Sri Lanka Section.
It became an independent local institute in 1994, following the registration with the Registrar of Companies as the ‘The Plastics and Rubber Institute of Sri Lanka.’
The principal objective of PRISL is the facilitating of the industrial development, mainly through training and education of the employees in plastics and rubber industries and promoting school-leavers to join the industry.”
The vision of the Institute is to be the preferred professional association in Sri Lanka to represent, advice and influence policy makers and industrialists towards improving technology, human resources and innovation in the Plastics and Rubber Industry in Sri Lanka, while the mission is to chart the future directions of the Plastics and Rubber Industry in Sri Lanka, by participating in policy formulation, catalyzing technological advancements and disseminating knowledge, whilst developing technical skills required for the industry.”
The PRISL conducts regular educational programs for those employed in the industry. These include Certificate courses in Plastics, Dry Rubber and Latex Technology, Diploma, Higher Diploma and Graduateship course in Polymer Technology.
The Institute is registered at the Technical and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC) since 1999. The Diploma course together with the Higher Diploma course is accredited by the TVEC at Level 5 of National Vocational Qualification. Its graduates follow the MSc in Polymer Technology course at the Sri Jayewardenepura University.
The Graduateship course is also recognized by the Cochin University, as an entry requirement for the Post Graduate Degrees in Polymer Technology.
State Minister Karunarathna Paranawithana said that he was happy to learn the services of the PRISL in Training and Skills Development activities and said that he would assist the institute to enhance its services in the much needed areas of Training and Skills Development of the Personnel for the Development of the Polymer Industries.
