The Jetwing Jaffna Hotel opened by President Maithripala Sirisena in 2016

The Jetwing Jaffna Hotel which is celebrating its third anniversary next month, would be opening Jaffna Peninsula’s first authentic Ayurveda Spa in mid 2019.

In addition, the hotel developed by MMBL- pathfinder, Jetwing Hotels and Regency Teas with an investment of Rs. one billion, would add a swimming pool and Gym to their catalogue this year. “We have already bought a land adjoining the hotel for the project,” Chairman, Jetwing Hotels Hiran Cooray said.

The other institutional investor Leon Holdings, headed by a Sri Lankan expatriate hailing from Jaffna, is a partner of a successful business venture in Europe.

The land on which the hotel was constructed had been purchased in 1975 by late Deshamanya N. U. Jayawardena, the first Sri Lankan Governor of the Central Bank and entrepreneur, who realized the potential of Jaffna over 40 years ago.

The project has also succeeded in providing employment opportunities for over 80 youths from Jaffna, who were provided with training in the hospitality industry by Jetwing Hotels.

The Jetwing Jaffna Hotel consisting of 8 floors and a basement car park, has 54 deluxe rooms with air condition, Peninsula restaurant that could accommodate 120 guests and conference/meeting facilities for 40 guests. It also has the tallest roof top bar in Jaffna that could house 100 guests.

“The hotel is also expected to four star status this year, which would make it the highest classified hotel in the region,” said General Manager of Jetwing Jaffna, Christopher Ponnadurai.

Employed in the hotel industry for over 38 years and having worked in Australia as well, he said that they had a mix bag of clients which include, corporates, local and foreign investors, NGO staff, local and foreign tourists.

The hotel maintained an average occupancy of around 69% last year, with average guest nights being around two nights. “We see the Jaffna Conference International Conference Center and Pallai Airport opening of international traffic along with a ferry service to India being launched from Kankesanthurai this year. These would not only increase our occupancy, but would also increase our room nights.”

“We also offer Palali Airport and Jaffna Railway Station drop and pick up services and excursions to nearby places of interest.”

Resident Manager, Jetwing Jaffna Hotel, Nilanthi Wejesooriya, said that the hotel is organizing regular events to attract residents of the area. “We host a Roof Top BBQ event every Saturday, Jaffna Night every Wednesday and Indian Night offering Indian spirits on Sunday which are very popular.”

Jetwing Jaffna Hotel will also introduce a Pizza counter and also a Cake and Pastry making classes soon targeting the housewives. (SS)
