Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd (AASL) will commence the construction of Terminal 2 of the Bandaranaike International Airport soon, Chairman G.A. Chandrasiri told Daily News yesterday.
Chandrasiri, was Governor of the Northern Province prior to his appointment as AASL Chairman.
The AASL Chief also explained that the commencement of the construction of the Terminal 2 was to commence during the tenure of President Mahinda Rajapaksa but was halted. The previous regime changed even the original design from the Lotus Bud to the Araliya flower and where the cost was also exceedingly more. He also said that Cabinet approval has to be got for the commencement of the Terminal 2 and we will be commencing soon after that.
He said that the passenger capacity of the terminal is 6.9 million, but at the end of 2019, there were 10 million arrivals. So, with the completion in three years, we are planning for 20 million passengers.
