The opening of LOT Polish Airlines direct flight connections between Warsaw and Colombo in November 2019 created new opportunities for bi-lateral economic relations.
With the opening of the Polish Airlines, it is expected that the number of Polish tourists visiting Sri Lanka (vice versa) will rise significantly.
“There is a constant growth in the number of polish tourists visiting Sri Lanka, and it was around 15,000 visitors in 2017,” Ambassador of Poland to Sri Lanka Adam Burakowski told at a session on ‘Bilateral Trade between Sri Lanka and Poland’ organised by the National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka this week. In 2019, total bi-lateral trade between Poland and Sri Lanka was USD 156.8 million. The majority of which was comprised on Sri Lankan exports to Poland to the tune of USD 140.8 million.
The main items of exports from Sri Lanka to Poland in 2019 were tea, belts, harnesses and binders, ready-made garments, tobacco, and pneumatic tyres and related accessories. Polish exports to Sri Lanka in 2019 included paper and cardboard products, rolled steel products, iron, and steel products, and related parts, sugar.
Presently, Poland and Sri Lanka have entered into agreements on Double Tax Avoidance, cooperation in the field of culture, education and science, and tourism.
