The Chief Cashier of the Southern Expressway’s Gelanigama Exit who is allegedly involved in the theft of Rs 1.4 million from the Cash Safe of the Bandaragama Gelanigama Inter Exit was remanded by the Panadura Acting Magistrate Piyadasa Alankara till September 23.
Sgt Samanlal Edirisinghe of the Crime Branch of Bandaragama Police produced the suspect before Court on September 18 along with a "B report” following the investigations conducted by the Bandaragama Police and the Panadura Police Division Crime Investigations Branch officials after a complaint was received from the Southern Expressway Officials that Rs. 1.4 million had been missing from the Chief Cashier since midnight on September 11 from the Gelanigama Office at Bandaragama. Bandaragama Police along with the Panadura Division Crime Investigations Bureau officials conducted investigations and arrested the suspect in Bandarawela on September 17. On interrogation, Rs. 384,000 in cash had been recovered from his possession. The suspect admitted that he used the balance money to settle loans that he had taken from his friends.
Police identified the suspect as a liquor addict and a gambler while in service at the Galanigma Inter Exit. Bandaragama Police is investigating.
