Aeroflot the Russian airline will operate direct flights to Colombo from November 4. This will be two flights per week. The flights will be operated on a wide-body Airbus A330-300 aircraft.
The airline has already opened the sale of tickets for direct flights on the Moscow-Colombo (Sri Lanka) route.
At the moment, air traffic between Sri Lanka and Russia has been resumed after a break amid the coronavirus pandemic with SriLankan airlines operating flights. Russian citizens can enter the territory of Sri Lanka, having previously issued an electronic visa, Aeroflot noted. Travel will require a negative test for COVID-19 in English, taken no earlier than 72 hours before departure. A repeated test must be passed upon arrival at the Colombo international airport.
Meanwhile, Tourism Minister Prassana Ranatunga said that he will address a special meeting with Russian tour operators and related companies to promote more Russian tourists to visit Sri Lanka. A photographic exhibitor depicting tourism hot spots in Sri Lanka too would be held on September 6. A similar promotion is to follow in Ukraine next week.
Since opening the airport for international traffic and tourism Russia and Ukraine had been among the top 10 countries fielding tourists to Sri Lanka.
Under the guidance of the former ambassador to Ukraine Udayanga Weeratunge, a pilot project was launched to woo tourists from both Ukraine and Kazakhstan and it attracted over 10, 000 tourists. Overall over 24,300 tourists have arrived and only 250 very tested positive from them and were treated while only 100 are still being hospitalized.
Ranatunga said that all these countries have expressed satisfaction in the manner in which the government was initiating the C-19 vaccination drive, treatment of patients and also the successful management of the C-19 bio bubble concept.
