Location data compiled by Google from Sri Lankan smartphone user’s show that there has been a 32 percent increase in smartphone location history in residential places.
The location data is compiled by Google as part of their anonymized insights they use in products such as Google Maps. They feel the data could be helpful to make critical decisions to combat COVID-19.
For the data up to March 29 over the baseline time spent at areas classified residential locations increased 32 percent while retail and recreation saw an 86 percent decline, grocery and pharmacy saw an 87 percent decline, transit stations saw a 78 percent decline, parks saw a 57 percent decline, and workplaces saw a 50 percent decline.
The baseline location history was calculated by looking at the median value, for the corresponding day of the week, during the 5-week period Jan 3–Feb 6, 2020. The reports show trends over several weeks with the most recent data representing approximately
