Jaffna passenger flights to boost Northern economy

After a lapse of several years Ratmalana - Jaffna scheduled flights commenced from Saturday with domestic airline operator FitsAir launching three weekly flights.

An official from Airport Aviation Services said that launching schedule flights to Jaffna can be considered as a national landmark.

“With the commencement of domestic scheduled operations to Jaffna from Ratmalana, the Northern part of the country will be connected to the domestic civil air transportation network.”

“Several leading Tamil businessmen and investors in Colombo will benefit from this airline service. In addition tourists too now get the opportunity to fly to Jaffna in less than two hours which will boost tourism in the North.”

“Further, this connectivity will help international tourists to make their trips to Northern destinations and boost the tourism industry.

This initiation will explore the opportunities to capture a portion of the rapidly growing travel market in the Northern and Western parts of Sri Lanka.”

The Ratmalana airport, earlier known as Colombo airport was the first international airport commencing commercial operations since February 28, 1938.

Under the direction of Prasanna Ranatunga, Minister of Tourism & Aviation and with the guidance of Major General G. A. Chandrasiri, Chairman of Airport Aviation Services Limited (AASL), the Colombo Airport Ratmalana will be developed to meet intentional standards.

The Ministry has identified five main areas, 1.International ‘Corporate Jet Operations’ 2. Promote the airport as a ‘Domestic Aviation Hub’ 3.

To promote the airport as an Aviation Training Hub in the region 4. Promotion of the airport for ‘FBO & MRO Investments’ 5. To promote the airport for international ‘Regional Airports Operations’ for development.
