
Harpo’s School of Hospitality & Tourism Management (HSHTM) in Galle tied up with Coleman College Singapore, as the local partner to offer Diploma and Advanced Diploma Courses in the tourism Industry in Singapore to meet the ever increasing demand of providing skilled personnel to the Hospitality Industry both locally and internationally.
Regional Head of Admissions, Coleman College Singapore, Loh Ben Ni said that there is growing demand from Sri Lankan youth to join their institution and decided to join with HSHTM to recruit new students and also provide theory and ‘on the job training’ for students who has qualified from HSHTM.
He said due to availability of jobs and high financial retunes, globally there is an increase trend where female workers also joining the profession. “We have a around 2,000 student population and around 40% are women and this percentage is increasing.”
Philippines has equal number 50% female students while in India, the Maldives and Bangladesh it’s around 20%. He said that Sri Lankan female students too are growing and they are currently at around 35%.
Managing Director, HSHTM and The Bay Leaf restaurant, The Commons Coffee House, Harpo’s Pizza and Park Street Mews restaurant, Harpo Gooneratne said that in Sri Lanka there is an increase demand for culinary education among female students.
HSHTM established in 2012 conducts 3 to 6 month certificate programs on a range of hospitality subjects and focused on providing grass root level training for students to enter the trade and offering them the opportunity to progress in the industry.
Currently HSHTM has around 500 students and to give the youth more exposure in the Tourism & Hospitality industry we tied up with Coleman College Singapore to take advantage. “Our students training in Singapore for three months and also get on-the-job hands on Training and gain experience in Restaurants and hotels and be ready for certifications and to find employment. “They can even gain employment n Australia.”
“Our focus is to train competent young people who have the passion to serve and we are confident that we can achieve that, and partnering with `Coleman College - Singapore is a huge advantage for those who wish to pursue higher studies,” he said.
The provision of a good hospitality service is essential with Sri-Lanka becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination. It was the need to fill the void for well trained staff in the hospitality industry that motivated Harpo’s School to collaborate with Coleman College Singapore.
