Chandra Bakers and Garden Ranala to receive Rs. 150 mn facelift

One of the oldest bakers in Sri Lanka, Chandra Bakers and Chandra Garden Ranala would be investing over Rs. 150 million to upgrade and add new facilities to take their property to the next level and most importantly provide the much needed dining experience to the area.

Founder Chairman L. P. Chandrasena said that they started the business in 1972 at a time a loaf of bread was sold at 10 cents and several bakers items such as hot dogs, sandwiches and take always ect. were not even heard of. “There were no online or telephone calls to accept orders and I myself took buns, biscuits and bread in a box in a bicycles and sold them,” he recalled

“We also had a major issue with the closed economy in 1971 and I had to personally meet a former Minister Fielex Bandaranayake to obtain permission to get an additional flour quota to fulfil many bakery needs.”

Having started with five employees now I expanded and today there are three generations managing the diversified aspects of the property. We expanded by purchasing three areas and introduced a banquet hall, a special two tier dining out area, special private dining out cabanas, kiddies play area and also a swimming pool to give out a complete family entertainment option to residents in the area.”

He said that they will now be opening their second outlet opposite the Oruwala Steel corporation this month and would also introduce several other facilities to Chandra Garden.

“We plan to have more private outdoor dining facilities and also hope to build a special restaurant in an artificially created lake in the premises to cater to 80 guests. We will also market this property to tourists through travel agents next year.”
