The C-19 Sinopharm vaccines were administered to 4,000 people in four locations in the Hambantota District which included 500 tourist hotel staff, tour guides, tour drivers and 150 safari drivers.
This initiative was made by Sports and Youth Affairs Minister and Digital Technology Enterprise Development State Minister Namal Rajapaksa and Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga on numerous requests made by the travel and tourism sector.
Ranatunga said “As the world gradually opens up to tourists this vaccination program will help to keep the local tourism sector stakeholders safe while accommodating tourists in the future. This program targeting the tourism sector will continue in other provinces as well.”
Rajapaksa said that vaccination is the key to fully open the country and restart the economic revival. “Sri Lanka was one of the first countries in the region to open for visitors under the ‘Geo bubble concept’ when we hosted the first IPL cricket tourism and set a benchmark.”
