Sport and Tourism to be jointly promoted

Sri Lanka should organize and host more tourism-based sports events to boost both sports and tourism said the newly elected Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Namal Rajapaksa.

Such events will also help to promote destinations and will help hotels in the area to gain high occupancy during the period of games. He made these comments at the opening ceremony of the inaugural two-day Hambantota Districts Beach Games at Hambantota beach. Over 100 teams participated at the event.

The games were organized by Fit Sri Lanka along with Lanka Sportsrizen (LSR) to develop tourism based sports in Sri Lanka. Fit Sri Lanka has decided to conduct beach games all around the country.

Fit Sri Lanka was formed in the vision of Namal Rajapaksa. The Fit Sri Lanka organization plans to organize similar events islandwide due to the overwhelming response they received for the inaugural event.

Rajapaksa also said that he will introduce a new policy framework to develop the sports industry and increase wellness by taking into account ideas and opinions generated from the public.

He said that Hambantota is a good venue for Sea-based sports and tourism activities. Such activities will provide the youth with employment opportunities.
