For the first time in Sri Lanka, a ‘Laser Generation’ educational workshop for the beauty care industry will be held on September 29 at JAIC Hilton Colombo from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event conducted under strict health guidelines is organized by two leading cosmetologists, Chamalie Caldera and Nipuni Fernando. This is especially for beauticians who want to differentiate their skill levels among the rest.
With the advancement of technology, the adaptation of non-surgical laser treatment for beauty care industry is increasing both globally and locally.
Caldera, Chairperson, Chamalie Caldera Hair Design & Beauty Academy Boralesgamuwa said, “However, Sri Lanka only has a handful of qualified and experienced staff that could perform this treatment. Also a few of the non-qualified staff use customers as guinea pigs to learn the technology on a trial and error basis, leaving the customer helpless.”
“Hence there is a huge void for quality and trained professionals to handle laser treatment in the beauty care segment and this is the reason why we decided to host this work shop.”
She said that they want Sri Lankan beauticians and salon owners to get an insight of the non-surgical cosmetic treatments so that they would have a better knowledge of laser treatment. “We will also have the services of Aesthetic Medicine Specialist Dr. Subodha Manoj and Marketing Expert Kasun Caldera as guest speakers at the event. They will provide insights of the laser treatment and how it could be marketed to clients to earn bigger revenue from the business.
“There will also be a live demo on ‘Laser Generation’ and we will also provide the participation certificate for all who attend this event,” she said.
Both Chamalie Caldera and Nipuni Fernando are among the only three persons in the industry who holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Cosmetology and are certified lifetime members of the Institute of Laser & Aesthetic Medicines-India Affiliated to the University of Greifswald, Germany.
Chamalie Caldera has over 25 years of experience in the hair & beauty sector and she holds a BSc Degree in Cosmetology and a Post Graduate Diploma in Cosmetology along with many other professional qualifications. She is also a TVEC and NAITA Assessor for levels 3 & 4 and a member of National Competency Standards for level 4 Bridal Dresser.
Nipuni Fernando said that to perform and receive laser treatment is costly but it can be converted into a major money earning profession for salon owners. “We are also hoping to conduct similar workshops in Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Matara and Anuradhapura soon,” she stated.
Fernando is an academic with over 15 years of experience in the hair & beauty training sector and holds a BSc Degree in Cosmetology and a Post Graduate Diploma in Cosmetology along with dual City & Guilds UK Licentiateship (LCGI) being one of the two dual licentiateship holders in Sri Lanka. Further, she is one of the very few TAE Australian training and assessing qualification holders and the only assessor for AQF (Australian Qualification Framework) Level 5 Beauty Therapy in Sri Lanka.
The duo, commenting on the post Covid industry trends, said that customers still fear to visit saloons to obtain advance treatment. “However this should change as all Saloons and Beauty Clinics have taken additional health precautions spelled out by health authorities,” they said.
They said that there is a shortage of branded cosmetics due the Covid Pandemic and limited import ban. “However the locally produced alternative products are of very high quality using these is a saving for them,” they concluded.
