Kandy Laksala opens

Sri Lanka’s state owned gift and souvenir emporium, Laksala Handicraft Showroom Kandy was opened by Industries and Supply Chain Management Minister Wimal Weerawansa. The showroom is located at Sangaraja Mawatha, Kandy.

With the opening of Laksala, the management has decided to offer a special discount on products to both employees from the government and private sector institutions, located in Kandy.

The showroom opens from 9 am to 6 pm every day including holidays.The objective of opening this renovated Laksala showroom is to fulfill the long felt request of a large number of local and foreign visitors regularly visiting the historical Kandy city for religious activities as well as for shopping during their sight- seeing tours.

Laksala is the leading gifts and souvenir outlets chain in the country as it has a large collection of ornaments, silver, gold and traditional gem and jewellery items, high quality brass wear and leather product items, Textile (handloom and batik), wood carving, garments, rush and reed, tea, spices, ceramic, leather and many other creative products.

Minister Weerawansa said this Laksala outlet will immensely benefit not only local and foreign visitors but also a large number of craftsmen living in Kandy and suburban areas to sell their products under one roof. Laksala, Chairman Sujeewa Palliyaguruge said issuing the guarantee certificate with the State emblem for purchasing verities of gem and jewellery items is the main reason for large number of foreign tourists visiting Laksala.

Chairman Palliyaguruge said in addition to its main showroom outlet in Colombo Fort, Laksala has 12 main outlets.

It is said that Laksala is the only State owned Gift and Souvenir Shop, established in 1964 under the National Crafts Council to promote Sri Lankan crafts locally and internationally and also to help local craftsmen to sell their products convincingly.

Laksala, Director General/CEO Madhura De Silva said during the peak tourist season in the months of November, December, January and February a large number of foreign tour groups visit Laksala show rooms island-wide. “Not only foreigners, but also locals, Government and private sector institutions , local embassies, foreign dignitaries visiting Sri Lanka are keen to buy our products.
