The government will relook at attracting investors for the proposed Galle Harbour Yacht Marina which was stalled for the past five years said State Minister for Prot Development, Kanaka Herath after a vist tot eh Port.
A Saudi Arabian investor, Hadi Al Hammam stepped in to the proposed development of Galle Marina through its Sri Lankan based company three years ago but the project did not take off.
One of the biggest issues hampering the development of Galle Harbour is a lack of a breakwater and the government is ready to build this. The outer port area too would be refurbished to make it more tourism friendly. A Yacht Marina Zone will also be established soon in the Port of Galle to promote tourism.
Since Galle harbour area is recognized as a UNESCO World heritage site all development would be done safeguarding the cultural interests.
The Galle Prot today is mainly used for Clinker unloading operations and a transit point for ‘Seafarers’. The government is now looking at new investors for the development of the Galle Harbour which would be mainly for tourism as it can feed in to the southern tourism belt.”
No major development had taken place at the Galle Harbour after 2015 and when the breakwater is completed the Galle Harbour can be open for foreign investors.
“The Prot will also have a bigger immigration counters and a mini duty free in the future. (SS)
