Mission Director USAID visits Moneragala communities

Fifty Sinhala, Muslim and Tamil differently-abled individuals in the Moneragala district received equipment, tools and skills training to improve their businesses, earn an income and play an active role in the community.

Reed Aeschlimann, Mission Director of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for Sri Lanka and the Maldives handed the assistance supported under a USAID supported initiative implemented by Global Communities and Wellassa Organization of Persons with Disabilities on October 23.

Aeschlimann opened a community hall in Akkara 7, Maduruketiya GND in the Monaragala district.

The facility, repaired by Sinhala and Tamil residents and material supported under a USAID-supported initiative, will serve as a multipurpose venue for community activities and cultural events. This facility would benefit 250 local residents to improve inter-ethnic relations and their quality of life.

He also handed over a renovated irrigation canal to the farming community of Wijeyapura, Moneragala on October 22. The supply canal would help to irrigate 200 acres of rice paddy land and benefit more than 200 families.

Aeschlimann met with members of women’s organizations who received livelihood training and inspected their products. These interventions were supported by USAID under an initiative implemented by Global Communities and the Peragamana Guild.
