Lanka Nature Conservationists (LNC) in partnership with the Lyn De Alwis Memorial Wildlife Trust and corporate sector have organized a Memorial Lecture to commemorate the life & work of Deshabandu Lyn De Alwis on the occasion of his 10th death anniversary.
The lecture will be held on Friday, December 16, 2016 at Sri Lanka Foundation Auditorium, Colombo 7 at 5.00 pm.
The lecture will be on the theme of “Role of modern zoos in education and wildlife conservation” and will be delivered by Prof. Lalith Jayawickrama, of Natural Sciences Department of Dubuque University, Iowa, USA. Prof. Jayawickrama is a specialist in animal nutrition with varied experience in zoos, research and conservation.
He was also a Student Guide Lecturer and a member of the Young Zoologists Association of the Dehiwela Zoo during his student days in the 1970s. The lecture will be followed by a Q & A session with an eminent panel taking questions from the house.
Deshabandu Lyn de Alwis was the longest serving Director of the Dehiwela Zoo and one of the most illustrious. He was a key consultant in the design and formation of the Singapore Zoo and also has made significant contributions to many other zoos around the world. De Alwis made
significant advances in the exhibition of animals in enclosures replicating the natural habitat of the animals.
The creation of a park atmosphere at the Dehiwela zoo with balanced attention both to fauna and flora was at a peak during his tenure.
Emphasizing on the educational value of a zoo, he made special arrangements to assist school children visiting the zoo by providing a guide service to them through volunteer Student Guide Lecturers.
This memorial lecture is to honour this great personality on the occasion of his 10th death anniversary and is organized by the Association together with the Lyn de Alwis Memorial Wildlife Trust and is expected to be attended by the Minister of Wildlife and Sustainable Development, Gamini Jayawickrama Perera, Ministry officials, Zoo officials, University Zoology Faculty members, wildlife and nature activists, professionals, enthusiasts, tourism officials, students and the general public and update themselves on this timely topic of the development of zoos.
The LNC comprise of the founder and early members of the Young Zoologists Association (YZA) formed in 1972 by the late Deshabandu Lyn de Alwis, an association functioning very effectively to date.
