The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and the Ankara Chamber of Commerce, Turkey virtually signed a historical Memorandum of Understanding to further enhance trade, investment and tourism between Sri Lanka and Turkey on the 29 September, 2021.
The Ankara Chamber of Commerce is the representative body of the industrial and commercial entities of Ankara, established in 1923 in the capital of Turkey with an objective of increasing the flow of trade through creating business opportunities and improving the business climate for the private sector.
Rizvi Hassen, Ambassador for Sri Lanka in Turkey delivering his welcome address stated that “I wish to congratulate both leading Chambers in Sri Lanka and Turkey for formally establishing a partnership today which is a result of a continuous engagement that Embassy had with the two counterparts Trade Chambers for some time. Previously, as per the Mission initiative to connect as possible trade chambers and important institutions in Turkey with Sri Lankan counterparts, we connected Trade & Industry Chambers based in Turkey with prominent Trade Chambers in Sri Lanka to enhance trade and business relations”.
Ambassador Rizvi Hassen further stated that “we were managed to hold the Second Session of the Joint Committee on Economic and Technical Cooperation meeting between Sri Lanka and Turkey virtually in July this year with presence of the two Co- Chairs of the two countries, Minister of Trade in Sri Lanka and the then Minister of National Education of Turkey.
During this session, both Ministers set the target to achieve 500 million trade volume by 2022” and I believe it would open a window of opportunities to collaborate among the members of Ceylon Chamber of Commerce & the Ankara Chamber of Commerce to benefit the business communities of the two countries”.
Further the MoU will stimulate the private sector and enhance understanding of the culture of doing business which in return will increase the trade volume between Sri Lanka and Turkey.
"We have similar objectives and we enter into an alliance with the Ankara Chamber of Commerce in order to promote the private sector business entities to become reciprocal partners and to extend all support, cooperation and assistance to each other for the overall benefit of both countries" said Vish Govindasamy, Chairman of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce.
Vish Govindasamy, Chairman of the Ceylon Chamber and Gursel Baran, President of the Ankara Chamber of Commerce signed the MOU in the presence of His Excellency Rizvi Hassen, Ambassador for Sri Lanka in Turkey and Manjula de Silva, Chief Executive Officer of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce.
The scope of the MOU would be to disseminate trade and investment related information to enhance bilateral trade and business, initiate/promote joint ventures, partnerships and other business linkages, provide technical expertise, arrange business promotion missions between the two countries, formulate proposals to accelerate bilateral relations and convene Business Forums and Business Matchmaking Sessions.
