‘SL should be positioned as ‘regional collection, redistribution hub’

Safe and secure interchange locations are at a premium and Sri Lanka is ideally positioned astride the main sea route with multiple ports and two international airports, Romesh David, Chief Executive Officer at South Asia Gateway Terminal- Port of Colombo Sri Lanka said.

Speaking at an awareness program on ‘Sri Lanka’s Position on Logistics and Supply Chain’, organised by Sri Lanka Export Development Board recently he said Sri Lankan missions should look for foreign direct investment opportunities especially in freight forwarding and logistics service providers, large scale warehousing and logistics parks, ship crew companies, maritime law firms, cold chain operations and etc. Noting that Sri Lanka needs ‘Plug and Play’ facilities like Dubai and Singapore, he said it is also essential to promote Sri Lanka as a collection and redistribution hub for the region- Multi National companies that source in the region and supply to the region.

He added that the new legal regime around the Colombo Financial Centre in the Port City will also create a conducive regulatory environment and ample infrastructure on par with Dubai, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur ( SIN, DXB and KL).

On the cold chain operations side, he said that refrigerated warehousing, transport fleets are needed to meet Sri Lanka’s increasing demand for reefer logistics in the tourism and retail industry.
