The Cabinet of Ministers, at its meeting yesterday, approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Power Dallas Alahapperuma to initiate a new feasibility study aimed at increasing the capacity at the Sapugaskanda refinery from the current 40,000 barrels per day to 100,000 (bpd)
The Corporation Refinery meets only 25 % of the local demand for refined petroleum products. The remaining 75% has to be imported, making a greater impact on foreign exchange. A feasibility study was conducted in 2010 for the renovation and expansion of the refinery to increase its’ capacity up to 100,000 (bblspd). Subsequent technological changes in the field have made it impossible to proceed on the results of the feasibility study.
EMPTY BULLET CASES FOR TRADITIONAL INDUSTRIES
Cabinet has approved a proposal from Industries Minister Wimal Weerawansa for the obtaining of empty bullet/shell cases and disposed armour plates from the Sri Lanka Army, Navy and Air Force as raw materials required for traditional industries.
Attention has been drawn to solve the issues confronted by the traditional craftsmanship industries and rural industries sector to empower those involved in those industries since they have been revealed to be one of the sectors that can considerably influence the Sri Lankan economy
Systematic production and distribution of fertiliser
The Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal presented by Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage for the systematic production and distribution of fertiliser in Sri Lankato take the initiative to provide infrastructure with scientific standards and components based on an automated centralized methodology upon instructions of the Information and Communication Technology Agency, including the followings into the scope.
Completion of National Fertilizer Secretariat with modern technologies, improving existing laboratories strengthening the district level operating and evaluation system including a field inspection mechanism to be established in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology
Re-establishment of Spices, Allied Marketing Board
Cabinet approved the proposal made by the Minister of Plantation Industries Dr. Ramesh Pathirana to reactivate the Spices and Allied Products Marketing Board and continue its activities.
Spices and allied products Marketing Board is currently under the purview of the State Ministry of Development of Minor Crops including Sugarcane, Maize, Cashew, Pepper, Cinnamon, Clove, Betel Related Industries and Export Promotion.
