From inception, Esri’s values have been rooted in purpose and service and a mission to inspire positive change, whereas a brand they have relentlessly pushed the boundaries of geographic science and opened the world to the possibilities of powerful geospatial technologies.
Facebook During this Recent Pandemic GIS Solution’s own ArcGIS Expert tech Staff Supported the Disaster Preparedness & response division at the Ministry of Health and the Taskforce to Map the COVID-19 Incident, whilst John Hopkin’s University in America utilized the ArcGIS Platform to create the famous World Map for Monitoring COVID-19 case Incidents.
Some Local TV stations leveraged on this map to bring statistics to local viewers of this global pandemic
In this article Ashani Jayasinghe-Dabare the CEO of GIS Solutions (Private) Limited, shares her experience and insights on the relevance and the purpose “Location Intelligence” through the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS. GIS Solutions is the authorized sole Distributor for Sri Lanka appointed by Esri (Environmental Systems Research Institute Inc.) of the USA, developer of the ArcGIS software platform, the world’s leading software platform for GIS.
Common problems cannot be solved without intervention and intervention is impossible without visualization offered by ‘Maps’ and the insights it offers giving context and understanding to every situation. A table of data may present facts and figures, but it doesn’t tell a story.
A static table of data can help us realize there is a problem, but it cannot tell us accurately give insights on ‘where’ and the context it occurred. Only maps can accurately point out which are the most affected areas, help predict what are the vulnerable areas in the future, analyze trends as well as enabling us to know why those areas have got most affected, what can be done to reduce the impact etc. GIS-based mapping is the answer to all.
Maps define The Power of Location (the “Where”), whereby ArcGIS acts as a decision support tool or an information & asset management tool with a geographic component to it; it is a database (data repository) with a map attached to it. Similarly, like traditional map technology it ties locations to data, but ArcGIS can go beyond that and mash different sorts of data sets together to give more comprehensive insights, analysis and contextual reports and analysis to help governments and businesses to grow and make better data-driven accurate choices.
It can be considered a “System of Systems” collating data from different data sources and departments and help visualize everything in a One Map dashboard giving insights and taking in to account the contextual framework that things happen and had happened.
For example, Banks can use ArcGIS to promote minor accounts by considering birth rates to different bank branch locations, and with that the information they can map out what promotions, services, and discounts to offer for those bank branches located in high birth rate areas.
Another example of an everyday application of the technology – when looking at the Sri Lankan environment ArcGIS is being used to control dengue spread.
Using ArcGIS heat maps of locations, dengue formation can be pinned to the locations of dengue origin and preventative measures and tactics can be planned out before preventing a massive outbreak of dengue. GIS is a great collaboration tool that helps you to get real-time information and updates on what happening in “The Field” so a geographical perspective of what’s taken place is incorporated.
Uniquely, ArcGIS has even been used in 3D films like Zootopia to map out the scenery and create the 3D images of cityscapes which have been used to entertain the masses in theatres around the world. This same 3D technology is used globally to plan cities and buildings and even model ocean floors or floods. ArcGIS is a very much adaptable and alive technology that uses various data sets tied to different locations to provide more accurate indicators to make more informed choices through very comprehensive insights. The applications of ArcGIS platform are limitless like a child’s imagination and can be used across any sector.
Incidentally, almost all of Sri Lanka’s authoritative National Mapping and GIS Work is done using the ArcGIS Software Platform that GISS Markets, catering to 200+ organizations in Sri Lanka in their subtle style of being discreet yet potent in their offerings.
