Gujarati Chamber shows interest in Sri Lanka

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is to be signed between the National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka and the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI). An agreement was made to begin official correspondence to sign the MoU with the Chamber with Ketan Desai, President of SGCCI.

SGCCI of India is one of the apex trade associations of India, which represents the interests of trade and commerce in India, and acts as an intermediary between industry, Government and other relevant stakeholders on policy issues and initiatives. Desai cited close ties with President of India Narendra Modi. Desai presented images of multiple events with leading political figures including Narendra Modi and current Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Desai said the state of Gujarat has strong ties to the Bohrah community. He said he felt a strong bond with the people of Sri Lanka during his visit. The SGCCI representatives stated that there was lots of potential in Sri Lanka for collaboration on the production of textiles. The SGCCI has many representatives from the fabric manufacturing industry.

Established in the year 1940, SGCCI is the oldest apex body of Gujarat, with a focus on growth and development of trade and industry of Southern Gujarat region from Bharuch to Vapi and Umargaon towards Mumbai. This represents a fast-growing and one of the most prosperous parts of the State. SGCCI has a strong base of more than 7,500 direct members, 100 associations, and an indirect membership of more than 65,000 from a wide spectrum of trade and industry.
