Walkers salvages Sayura dredger in Hikkaduwa

The salvaged dredger ‘Sayura’

Walkers Colombo Shipyard, a subsidiary of MTD Walkers salvaged the 600 tonne dredger Sayura, belonging to the Fishery Harbour Corporation, which was grounded near the Hikkaduwa Fishery Harbour in a unique salvage operation.

Sayura, a high capacity grab-type dredger belonging to the Fishery Harbour had run aground on an outer break-water reef while on an active dredging operation. The dredger had moved on to the reef area and was stranded on a flat rock bed, making it impossible to move using a tug or vessel without damaging the bottom of the dredger.

What was thought to be a high risk operation was conducted by Walkers Colombo Shipyard, over a period of three weeks, which saw the use of six numbers of 100 ton capacity hydraulic jacks to lift the front of the vessel allowing the insertion of multilayer rubber inflatable rollers under the bottom of the ship. Once all the rollers were inflated the ship was pulled into the sea using ropes connected to heavy anchors.

“This was one of the most challenging jobs undertaken by the staff of Walkers Colombo Shipyard, showcasing their versatility and ability to respond to unique situations,” Walkers Colombo Shipyard CEO Dr. Sarath Obeysekera said.He adds, “I am thankful for our partner Dolphin Marine and its staff for assisting us with this operation.
