India is assisting in building the Agriculture and Engineering Faculties of the Jaffna University at Kilinochchi, said Consul-General for India in Jaffna, A. Natarajan.
Speaking at the 68th Republic Day of India celebration in Jaffna he remarked about the state of India-Sri Lanka relations highlighting the important but major infrastructural projects being undertaken by the Government of India in Northern Province. These include the construction of the upcoming Cultural Centre in Jaffna, restoration of the Thiruketeeswaram temple in Mannar and the construction of 50,000 houses.
Total trade between India and Sri Lanka was at almost $ 5 Bn (at $4.91 billion) in 2015 (by end-June 2016 totalled $2.05 Bn). In 1991 it was only a small $56 Mn. India also became the largest supplier to Sri Lanka in 2015--22.5% of Sri Lanka’s imports in 2015 were from India (China second at 19.7% and EU next, at 9.5%).
He said that Indian Chamber of Commerce the largest chamber in India has sent a strong delegation to the International Trade fair that concluded last Sunday and this too would help to bring in more FDI to Jaffna.
He also read out excerpts from the address of the Nation on the eve of the Republic Day by the President of India Pranab Mukherjee.
Differently-abled and Special Children from Jaffna presented a colourful programme on Indian culture at the flag-hoisting ceremony. To add colour to the Republic Day function, a brief cultural programme was also presented by the local School children at the gathering of Reception at Hotel Tilko in the evening.
