Tourist arrivals top 2 million in 2016

Sri Lanka passed the much awaited 2 million tourist arrivals mark by December 31.The country attracted 2,050,832 tourists showing a 14.0% year on year increase.

The 2015 year end arrivals were 1,798,380. The country saw the highest number of arrivals in December where there were 224,791 which was a 9.1% increase against the previous year. Top arrival destinations were from India China and Europe.

The number of tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka increased by 16.0 percent year-on-year to 167,217 in November of 2016, following a 13.7 percent rise in the previous month.

The number of visitors went up from China (+10.5 percent to 18,590); Middle East (+51.3 percent to 7,274); Western Europe (+16.4 percent to 46,565); South Asia (+12.1 percent to 46,319); and North America (+9.4 percent to 6,670). Tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka averaged 42960.57 from 1977 until 2016, reaching an all time high of 209351.00 in July of 2016 and a record low of 5536.00 in June of 1977.

The Sri Lanka Tourism is optimistic that Sri Lanka could attract 2.5 million arrivals by end of this year. (SS)
