Police bust cattle racket in luxury vans

The luxury van in which the cattle was transported

Officers attached to the Police Crimes and Operations Unit of the Central Province DIG's Office acting on a tip-off broke the lid off an organised illicit cattle transport racket when they confronted a convoy of three luxury vans engaged in transporting cattle and arrested seven suspects near the Maoya Bridge around 3.00 a.m. on Saturday.

Police said that they found eight head of cattle with their legs tied together and made to lie down, while five people were sitting on them pressing them to the floor of the air conditioned van of which seats in the back had been removed to prevent detection.

The other two vans were driven in the front and the back escorting the cattle.

Police said investigations revealed that the cattle were being taken from Dehiattakandiya to an abattoir in Deltota.

The animals who were in a serious condition almost breathing their last, were referred to a veterinary surgeon for treatment.

Investigations are continuing.
