The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka) will launch its second Business Plan Competition in January next year to encourage and educate Sri Lankan school children on the importance of preparing business plans that help to strengthen the Sri Lankan economy in the future.
This was revealed at a media conference conducted by CA Sri Lanka in Colombo. CA Sri Lanka President Lasantha Wickramasinghe, QUT Business School, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Assistant Dean Andrew Paltridge, CA Sri Lanka, Vice President Jagath Perera, Sri Lanka and Australia Chamber of Commerce, President Kalum De Silva , Ministry of Education , Director Commerce Kamani Perera and Sri Lanka and Australia Chamber of Commerce and Project Manager Saman Bandara were present.
According to rules, 60 teams from schools in Colombo,Gampaha, Galle, Kurunegala, Kandy and Jaffna will represent at the competition. Each team comprises of five students who will sit for the GCE Advanced Level Examinations in August 2017 and 2018 in Commerce stream (English medium) and the participating teams will be given the opportunity to choose topics related to business ideas. Winners will be selected from each zonal and they will then go on to compete at the grand finale which will be held in Colombo.
CA Sri Lanka, President Lasantah Wickramasinghe highlighted the importance of conducting such a competition to educate and encourage Schoolchildren on the importance of preparing business plans in addition to their studies.
He said CA Sri Lanka has a long history of 58 years and it is a professional organisation that works closely with the Sri Lankan Government and other regulatory authorities.
“We are one of the largest tertiary education providers in the country and currently we have over 37,000 students who are prepared to be chartered accountants,”
He said the BSc. Applied Accounting degree, offered by the institute has also received accreditation from foreign accounting bodies and universities including the CPA Australia and the Universities of Deakin and La Trobe.
He said CA Sri Lanka chartered accountants are the brand ambassadors of this institute and they are not only in demand in Sri Lanka but also overseas. We have over 5600 active members and over 30 percent are serving in about 40 countries including Australia, Middle East, Europe, United Kingdom America, South Asia and South East Asia,
“At least 30 percent of our membership hold top corporate positions in Sri Lanka and abroad,”
He said another important feature of this competition is that we will help our students who have entrepreneurial skills to become future entrepreneurs as we know Sri Lanka needs more entrepreneurs to drive our country.
CA Sri Lanka CEO Aruna Alwis said the winning team of the CA Sri Lanka Business Plan competition will get the opportunity to fly to Brisbane, Australia in May 2017 and compete in a similar competition .
He said all the expenses of the winning team will be sponsored by the Queensland University of Technology.
Queensland University of Technology Brisbane and the Assistant Dean of QUT Business School Andrew Paltridge said that such competitions will benefit brilliant students in Sri Lanka to become future professionals..
