IET Young Professionals Network to host ‘Innovative Solutions for Waste Management’ contest

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) celebrates its 150th anniversary this year and the IET Young Professionals Sri Lanka Network is hosting series of events in Sri Lanka, mainly focusing on sustainability and promoting creative engineering solutions under the local volunteer engagement fund.

IET Young Professionals Sri Lanka Network is organizing a waste management and solution competition to recognize innovative ideas and to encourage application of engineering & technology.

The competition will be organized under two categories, School students and for Undergraduates from local universities and professionals from industry.

Participants will need to do their deep dive into the current literature and build on top of it.

A judging panel consisting of industry leaders, researchers and experts will be selecting the best project ideas. The final evaluation will be held on the date of the awards ceremony. The winner from the school category will receive Rs 50,000 and the winner from professional category will receive Rs 100,000.

A series of webinars and talks will also be organized by industry professionals and social entrepreneurs to help students both understand and contextualize the challenges we face as a country in waste disposal.

Applicants should follow the guidelines and fill the template to ensure the validity of their submission. Participants do not need to have working prototypes but need to propose a realistic and implementable product or service solution.

Awareness sessions will be held via online prior to the project commencement. After the awareness sessions, proposals will be called from local university undergraduates and professionals from industry individually or as a group. Then only selected applicants will be able to participate for the preliminary rounds.

Applicants would present their ideas through a PowerPoint presentation for 15mins. The preliminary round will be held through an online platform due to the prevailing COVID 19 pandemic situation in the country.Five best concepts from each category selected to the grand finale.

Prior to the grand finale workshops will be held online with current entrepreneurial leaders in waste management to improve their proposals as mentioned before.
