Mahindra India, Ideal Motors to role out ‘Make in Sri Lanka’ Car

Mahindra India, together with Ideal Motors Sri Lanka, has assembled and rolled out 40, ‘KUV100 NXT,’ the first “Make in Sri Lanka” cars from their assembly facility in Welipenna. Forty more cars are now on sale, signaling a historic land mark in Sri Lanka’s Automotive Industry.

A JV between Mahindra and Ideal Motors along with an initial investment of over USD 20 million to assemble automotive vehicles in Sri Lanka, the first plant spread over 10+ acres of land was inaugurated in August.

“We would now open our sales doors to Sri Lankans from our exclusive Colombo Showroom, said Founder and Executive Chairman of Ideal Group, Nalin Welgama.

“Our production capacity of the plant is 5,000 units per annum, while we also hope to engage in exports,” he said. He said that in a bid to increase Value addition, Mahindra Ideal Lanka has localized four components, battery, tyres, seats and exhaust to be made in Sri Lanka.

“The plant is expected to provide employment to the tune of 200 people directly and indirectly over the next 2 years.”

The KUV100 NXT features 1.2 Litre/ 1198 CC Petrol Engine comes with many safely features such as 9th Generation Bosch Anti Braking System (ABS) with EBD, Dual Airbag, Automatic hazard lights on panic braking, Speed sensing automatic door locks built to international standards.
