To promote engineering and technology among young women engineers and to increase the participation of women in the field of engineering, The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Young Professionals (YP) Sri Lanka Network launched Young Woman Engineer (YWE) of the Award to honor the very best early-career female engineers working in Sri Lanka.
The event launch will be held on March 8, on Zoom from 7 p.m. onwards.
This is in line with the IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year award organized by United Kingdom launched in 1978. Introducing an award of this kind was a part of an initiative to address the female shortage of engineers in the industry, and inspire the next generation of female engineers by recognizing and celebrating their talents.
“For the consecutive third time, we are ready to select the best potential Young Woman Engineer of the year 2021,” an official from the organizers said.
Over the last fifty years, the female population represents more than half of the Sri Lankan population, whilst the representation of women in engineering & technology fields is considerably less in Sri Lankan industry. Women generally dominate all other fields except fields of engineering and technology at the university level. A situation similar to that can be seen in the industry as well.
