The Ceylon Institute of Builders (CIOB) says that small and medium scale construction contractors and the general public of building their houses have been hit hard by increasing price of tiles and bathroom sets in the Sri Lankan market.
Dr. Rohan Karunaratne, President of CIOB said the government should solve this issue as soon as possible.
“The government has restricted the import of tiles and bathroom sets due to the corona epidemic. Our major problem is the price increase. SME sector and ordinary house builders need tiles at a reasonable price. Now the problem is not only the scarcity but the price. Imported tiles and bathroom sets in the local market began to run out of stock and their prices increased.”
“Also the sanitary ware is the worst as the low income group had a chance to buy a set for Rs. 7000/- to 15,000/- range. Now it has gone up to 50,000/= range. Lot of SME sector contractors are stacked with the lack of required materials and the high price.
The condition of the tiles is also similar.
