The challenges and difficulties faced by the woman and empowerment of the woman, organized by National Savings Bank (NSB) was held at Waters Edge Hotel, Battaramulla, on March 8, to mark International Women’s Day which is celebrated globally.
This event was held under this year’s theme of International Women’s Day, “Women in leadership, achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world”. Shiranthi Rajapaksa was the Chief Guest. Pavithra Devi Wanniarachchi, the Minister of Health, Secretaries to the Ministries, Senior Administrative Officers, Keasila Jayawardena, the Chairperson of National Savings Bank, Senior Management of the Bank, screenplay writer and film director, Jayantha Chandrasiri and 16 ladies who have contributed to the national cause of protecting the people of this country from the spread of COVID-19 also participated.
Keasila Jayawardena, addressing the gathering, stated that in a backdrop where the women face numerous difficulties on a daily basis, the representation of women in the political sector both at home and abroad is not satisfactory.
The General Manager and CEO of the Bank, Ajith Peiris stated that the majority of NSB clientele is female and thanked all women customers for contributing to increasing the deposit mobilization of the Bank as well as the country through their habit of saving and thrift.
The National Savings Bank felicitated Shiranthi Rajapaksa for the continuous support and cooperation extended to the leadership of the country to assure a better life for the people.
The Minister of Health Pavithra Devi Wanniarachchi who steered the health sector during the pandemic was felicitated while the service of the Minister of Primary Health Care, Epidemics and Covid-19 Disease Control Sudarshani Fernandopulle was also appreciated.
Keasila Jayawardena, the Chairperson of NSB was celebrated for giving leadership in the year in which the Bank had recorded the highest profitability in its history. Additional Director General of Treasury Division of the Ministry of Finance Damitha Rathnayake and Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka Vivet Fernando received felicitations representing the finance sector.
Municipal Commissioner of Colombo Municipal Council Roshanie Dissanayake was felicitated representing the Public Administration and Public Service Sector. Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health, Epidemiology and Statistics Unit of the Colombo Municipal Council Dr Dinuka Guruge, was felicitated representing the Health Services Sector.
Consultant Microbiologist Dr Lieutenant Colonel Sureni Udugama of Sri Lanka Army, Dr Air Commodore Niluka Abeysekera of Sri Lanka Airforce and Dr Lieutenant Hemali Gunawardena of Sri Lanka Navy received felicitations representing the Three Forces.
Jenali Jansz and Amali Hettiarachchi of Sri Lankan Airlines, who volunteered to join the cabin crew of the mercy flight to Wuhan to bring the Sri Lankan students back to the country also received felicitations at the event.
Radeeja Jayani, the Chairman of APS Knitters Ltd Deepani Samarasinghe, and the Secretary to the Pungudutivu Food Manufacturers Society and President of the Jaffna Palmyrah Handicrafts Guarantee Ltd Jamunadevi Ponnampalam were felicitated by the Bank.
