Global ICT giant, HCL Technologies inaugurated its first global development center in Colombo, Sri Lanka recently.
Following the commencement of operation in Sri Lanka, HCL Technologies has shown promising signs of supporting Sri Lanka in achieving its digital transformation goals.
In this exclusive interview with the Daily News Business, the Corporate Vice President of HCL Technologies (HCL) Srimathi Shivashankar, speaks on how HCL is aiming to bring in new opportunities for the next generation of talent.
Q: How does HCL plan to share its knowledge and expertise in the field of ICT with Sri Lanka?
Collaboration is one of our core values at HCL. It allows us to conceptualize and deliver creative solutions in this evolving business landscape. We’ve been exploring several possibilities with academia, student communities and other stakeholders to establish platforms for exchanging technical knowledge.
We’ve found that there is no dearth in the conceptual knowledge and spontaneity among the students here. They do, however, have limited exposure to industry trends and career pathways. That’s why we launched our TechTalk series for them to get the industry trends and required essentials for progressing in the ICT sector from our very own leadership. We also have a few other initiatives in the pipeline.
Q: Why establish a global development centre in Sri Lanka?
Why not? Sri Lanka has a great tech talent pool. We also feel that it is important to set up offices in locations where the talent originates and provide employment opportunities to leverage their capabilities. You find Sri Lankans working across the world. Many of them completed their education in Sri Lanka and chose to migrate.
Q: How will HCL contribute to the job market in Sri Lanka?
We currently have a list of exciting employment opportunities for ICT professionals and graduates.
Also, we have exclusive training and hiring programs for A-Level (A/L) and HND students. We also expect to hire over 3,000 people in the next three years.
Q: How is HCL aiming to attract skilled ICT employees in Sri Lanka?
Our employees have an opportunity to provide solutions for 250 of the Fortune 500 and 650 of the Global 2,000 companies. Also, our work culture — or ideapreneurship as we like to call it — makes the license to ideate a distinctive organizational capability. Q: What is ‘TechBee’? How will it contribute to upskill ICT literacy and increase the employment rate of youth in Sri Lanka?
We aim to nurture talent at a young age. This way they can begin their professional careers early. TechBee is our exclusive training and hiring program for students who have completed their A/Ls. These students undergo a year of technical training and then begin their careers as entry-level IT/Software Engineers at HCL Sri Lanka. Students pursuing their HND program can also join TechBee. During their training and employment, students can pursue higher education (HND with ESOFT and if desired, a top-up degree) if they wish.
