Cloud is best on an open platform - Aju Sebastian

IBM Cloud Platform Executive Aju Sebastian said, “Cloud is best done on an open standard.” IBM advocated for the usage of their services that allow for more flexibility in implementation.

These sentiments were expressed on 13 October to the Federation of Information Technology Industry Sri Lanka on a webinar titled “Unlock the full potential of cloud and AI with IBM and Red Hat.

An open standard refers to a format or protocol that is: subject to full public assessment and use without constraints in a manner equally available to all parties.

IBM acquired Red Hat and formed its hybrid cloud division. Red Hat was the leading provider of open source products to enterprises. Usage of IBM Cloud Services does not have any setup or maintenance cost.

Sebastian noted that across regions cloud service pricing differs. Sebastian said, “A cloud centre in Sri Lanka has to pay electricity at local rates. In certain locations, cloud services are more expensive than in other locations. Some governments will give leeway.”

94% of enterprises globally use some form of cloud service and 67% use multiple cloud service providers. Multi-cloud environments are a challenge to certain enterprises.

IBM’s service offering built on the open standard does not have a vendor lock-in thereby allowing enterprises the freedom to use software applications that they see fit.

The importance of edge computing wherein processing takes place at the periphery of the network was highlighted due to the growth of the Internet of Things devices like sensors.
