
Queen’s Hotel Kandy, one of the oldest hotels in Sri Lanka, would soon be converted to be amongst the top few luxuary heritage hotels in the world. The hotel would also witness the addition of nearly 30 more room to their inventory under this upgrading drive.
General Manager Queen’s Hotel Kandy and Vice President of Galle Face Hotels, Ranjan Peiris, said that the moderation program would commence early next year. “The hotel is over 150 years old and the management had decided to add more luxuary to the hotel by elevating it to be among the top few luxuary heritage hotels in the world tourism catalogue.”

He said that when Galle Face Hotels took over the hotel from Kandy Hotels Co. (1938), it had only 27 rooms, while most of the rooms had shared toilets. “The management increased the inventory to 93, including six suites and also added private toilets to each room.”
“Under the new blue print forwarded by Group Chairman Galle Face Hotels Sanjeev Gardiner to develop the Queen’s Hotel with more rooms, new dining options and an elevated swimming pool too would be added.”
Having over 38 years’ experience in the hotel industry, he said that the Queens Hotel would also be refurbished similar to Galle Face Hotel in Colombo.
Been with the Galle Face Hotel for over 13 years, he said that today, their main market is Europe, UK and also religious traffic from Japan, Thailand, India and Myanmar. “We saw a sharp drop after the Easter Sunday blasts, but we witness signs of recovery for the winter season.”
“Queen’s hotels are the center of attraction during the Kandy Pageant and guests pay higher prices to stay with us. However, we may not see this happening at other times due to several new hotels lowering their prices due to intense competition and this is why the management had decided to offer the best product in Kandy with the upgrade of the property.”
Being the first General Manger of several hotels such as Light House Hotel and Tropical Villas, he said the banquet facilities too would be developed to cater to more functions and also a new international shopping mall with global designer bands would also be opened at the ground floor.
Resident Manger, Queen’s Hotel Kumara Adikari said that they also arrange several excursions to nearby places of interest and also goes out of their way to prepare offering for the Kandy Dalada Maligawa even at 6 a.m. “We also offer early ‘check in’ and ‘late check out’ for guests traveling in the train”.
