‘Fifty percent of schoolchildren suffer stress’

A total of 48 percent of Sri Lankan schoolchildren suffer from stress, Consultant Community Physician, National Programme Manager, School Health, Family Health Bureau Dr. Ayesha Lokubalasooriya said.

Speaking at a training programme on adolescent and youth health at the Taj Samudra in Colombo yesterday, she said stress has been caused by the pressures of educational activities, especially due to too much tuition and forcing children to study all the time without letting them engage in sports and extracurricular activities.

Dr. Lokubalasooriya pointed out that children should spend at least 30 minutes per day with their parents, engage in hobbies and spend time with each other. Otherwise, stress could lead to forgetfulness and poor performance at examinations.

Children should be given challenges that match their capacity. A child who was ranked last in the class at the term tests cannot be pressured to become the first. It is impossible for the child. The home should be a happy place for the child, she added.
