Tea demand improves, prices appreciate

This week’s auction offerings totalled 7.26 M/kgs. There was improved demand and a general appreciation of prices all round with the expectation of the extremely poor teas that were neglected.

Ex-estate offerings continued to be maintained around 1.1 M/kgs. Overall quality of offerings were similar to last and not withstanding there being no improvement in the overall standard of teas, it was a relief to observe improved activity and consequently appreciation in prices by an average Rs. 20 per kg and more.

Best Western BOP’s were irregular, whilst their corresponding BOPF gained Rs. 20 per kg and more for select invoices. In the Below Best category BOP/BOPF gained Rs. 20 per kg and more for select invoices following special inquiry. Plainer BOP’s were barely steady, whilst the corresponding BOPF - clean leaf coloury sorts gained Rs. 20-30 per kg, whilst the poor leaf and particularly the thin liquoring teas were barely steady.

Nuwara Eliyas select BOP invoices appreciated following special inquiry, whilst the others were difficult of sale. Corresponding BOPF continued to sell around last week’s levels. Udapussellawa BOP/BOPF were firm and up to Rs. 20 per kg dearer. Uva BOP’s gained Rs. 20-30 per kg and more following special inquiry, whilst the corresponding BOPF were irregular.

High & Mid Grown CTC BP1’s met with less demand and were irregularly easier, whilst the PF1’s were firm and tended dearer. Corresponding Low Grown BP1’s sold around last, whilst the PF1’s met with widespread demand and gained Rs. 20-40 per kg and more.
