Police failed to take action over complaint, woman claims

The Police Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating allegations that the police had failed to take action over a complaint lodged by a 38-year-old woman of Bandaragama.

Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said during a media briefing, “A woman, Abdul Haifa Fathima, claims she had lodged several complaints with the Bandaragama Police, but they had failed to take action against the perpetrators.

She claims that she was assaulted in Aluthgama, Bandaragama by a group of men since she is married to a Sinhalese man and as her husband had refused to convert to Islam. Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekera said several television channels had broadcast the incident.

He said the Police had launched an investigation to ascertain whether the Bandaragama Police had conducted a proper investigation into the complaint and if there had been any lapse on the part of the police.

He said the Bandaragama Police was asked to provide an explanation in this regard. The video footage of the incident broadcast on TV channels was also sent to the SIU.

He said the police will take action after receiving the SIU report.
