Star-Komar inaugurates world’s eighth Passive House Factory

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Chief Guest and US Ambassador Atul Keshap at the opening.

Star Group a pioneer apparel manufacturing company in Sri Lanka, with Komar a large apparel company in the USA opened South Asia’s first Passive House (PH) factory building in South Asia last week in Sri Lanka. It’s the eighth such factory buildings in the world.

The factory will house their world class innovation center in this global model for sustainability. Passive House standard which originated in Germany as ‘Passivhaus’ in 1988, is a rigorous and voluntary standard for energy efficiency in a building, reducing its ecological footprint.

It results in ultra-low energy buildings that require little energy for space heating or cooling and is accepted to be of a very high standard for sustainability, energy efficiency and occupant comfort.

The annual energy consumption is cut by over 70% compared to a conventional modern building. Adhering to this standard in the Innovation Centre will attract many buyers and brands that support global sustainability initiatives.

The newly constructed innovation center is a ‘one stop’ shop featuring world class design capabilities, a print resource library, pattern making facilities, sample making modules and a fabric and trim Library. The hands-on collaborative design process introduces a fully digitized system and 3D digital sampling.

An US team with the architects in Sri Lanka, experts and suppliers from over 20 countries across the globe joined to make ensure the high standards of PH is adhered to.

Most PH materials were not available in Sri Lanka and therefore had to be imported from Germany, India, Lebanon, Turkey and USA. Star is confident that this building will receive the Passive House Institute accreditation.

Established in 1908, Komar is an industry leader in the design, marketing, sourcing and distribution of Sleepwear, Intimates, Kids and Layering brands and is working with a network of factories in 12 different countries, a sourcing office in Hong Kong and distribution centers in the US and Europe, Komar continues to search for business opportunities worldwide. Star Garments (Pvt) Limited was established in 1978 and was the first company to be set-up in the Katunayake Free Trade Zone. Starting with one manufacturing plant in Katunayake, they have grown to 8 facilities in different areas and employs over 7,000 staff.

In 2015 a strategic investment was made by Komar that made Sri Lanka Komar’s regional hub for the entire Asian region and service their own brands in the US.
